What to do? 

The Catskills are actuallty the North East Portion of the Appalachian mountains that winds down through the Easter portion of the United States.  It ranges from the Hudson River in the East to the Delaware River at the west. Becoming the smaller, Poconos Mountains as it enters Pennsylvania. 

At its heart is the 700,000+ acre, Catskill Park, perserved inperpetuity from development by the New York State legislature and signed into law on the first Earth Day in 1970, by Govenor Nelson Rockefeller.

With in its confines it houses most of New York City's drinking water

 

Activities within the borders of the Range include the Worlds Biggest Kaliedescope in Phoenecia, Volunteer Fireman's Hall & Museum of Kingston, The Museum at Bethel Woods, in Bethel just outside of Montecello, on the site of 1969's Woodstock Arts Festival, The Roscoe O&W Railway Museum, and The Durham Center Museum. 

 

There are some of the most amazing hikes in North East, they are also made memorable by thier unique name, there is of course the Kaaterskills Falls which can be explored from the top or the middle or all the way to the bottom where Haines Falls and the Kaaterskill join forces, Becker Hollow to the Fire Tower, The Devil's Tomb Stone, Pratt's Rock, Vroman's Nose, and more.

Also the Hikes on Overlook Mountain takes you through a Tibetan Temple and the

Graham Mountain Trail takes you up to the ruins of a mid-century television relay station.  

 There are more than 30 climbable peaks that soar above 3500 feet and offer exciting views of the region. 

 

For ski enthusiasts, the Catskills offers five main downhill ski and snowboard resorts Belleayre Mountain (run by the Olympic Regional Development Authority) Hunter Mountain, home of the Ski Bowl, Windham Mountain Holiday Mountain Ski in Monticello, and Plattekill Mountain in Roxbury. The Mountain Trails Cross Country Ski Center in Tannersville has 22 miles (35 km) of trails.

 

A little furthur afield, there are great activities to be found on the easten side of the Hudson River. Hyde Park, and all things President Franklin D Roosevelt, The Rhinebeck Aerodrome, where biplanes still fly, Bard College, antiquing in Hudson, The Olana Historic Site, home of Hudson River artist, Frederic Edwin Church, and the FASNY Museum of Firefighting. If Catskill Park is not enough Minnewaska State Park and the incredible view from Sam's Peak in Cragmore is just a short drive.
